About the criminal case
What is Yevgeny charged with?
In July 2022, Yevgeny set off to an expedition to the Tyumen region, where he was searching for and studying early man sites. In the midst of the expedition he was located and detained by the OMON (Special Purpose Police Force). Yevgeny was already aware that a criminal case had been brought against him, but he was hoping that the law enforcement authorities would not look for him in the woods.

Mr. Kruglov was transported to Omsk, where he was questioned and charged with “dissemination of false information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” (article 207.3, part 1). The law enforcement officials claim that in May, the archeologist reposted several posts about the actions of the Russian military in Bucha and Mariupol using a closed VKontakte group. According to Mr. Kruglov, the law enforcement had been monitoring his VKontakte page since March.
Even before his detention in the woods, Federal Security Service officials came to see Mr. Kruglov at his place of residence. Yevgeny had to go to Centre “E” for questioning (the Center for Combating Extremism, a semi-independent unit within the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs) and to surrender his electronic devices and equipment for technical examination. Back then the story ended with a fine under the article on “discrediting the Russian Army”. And so Yevgeny left for an expedition (first to Tver and then to Tyumen), hoping that he would never have to face investigators again.

This time Yevgeny was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, based on the fact that as a young man he was treated for depression. With the help of his friends the scientist found a lawyer and now intends to appeal the hospitalization order. To spare his family’s feelings, Mr. Kruglov did not talk about the criminal charges on social media.
