Free Ilya Yashin!
The politician will remain in the detention center until November
Ilya Yashin is a Russian opposition politician and a friend and colleague of Boris Nemtsov assassinated in 2015. At the moment Ilya is facing up to 10 years in prison for “disseminating false information about the Russian Army”.
About the criminal case
What is Ilya charged with?
In 2021-2022, Ilya Yashin remained one of the few prominent politicians openly criticizing President Putin and the Russian vertical of power. In particular, on several occasions Mr. Yashin did not mince words on the account of Head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, saying that he was involved in the assassination of Boris Nemtsov. After the beginning of the “special operation”, Ilya recorded anti-war videos and streamed live, which couldn’t have gone unnoticed by the law enforcement authorities.

The police detained Ilya Yashin on the evening of June 27, 2022, when he was out for a walk with his girlfriend. Ilya was charged with “insubordination to the police” and arrested for 15 days. This administrative arrest was supposed to serve as a “warning” for Mr. Yashin, but the politician stated that he intended to remain in Russia till the end.

On the evening of July 12, 2022, one day before the end of his 15-day jail term, Ilya Yashin was taken in for questioning and charged with “disseminating false information about the Russian Army motivated by hatred” (article 207.3, part 2, sub-paragraph d). The charge is based on the videos broadcast on the politician’s YouTube channel, in which he discussed the events in Ukraine. The trial took place the next day, and the court sent Mr. Yashin to a detention center until September 12, 2022. Then the arrest was extended for 2 months.

Ilya has been engaged in politics for over 20 years, and during these years he has found himself in a jail cell following detention 13 times. His 39th birthday he celebrated behind bars. Throughout his career Ilya Yashin has worked alongside Aleksey Navalny in the “Yabloko” party, become one of the leaders of the 2011-2012 protests, and publicly opposed the annexation of Crimea and the Ukrainian “special operation”. Until 2021 Mr. Yashin was Head of the Krasnoselsky Municipal District, whose Municipal Deputies included Aleksey Gorinov and Elena Kotenochkina.

Ilya Yashin’s arrest and the criminal case against him mean, in effect, that the political field has now been completely “cleared” of the opposition politicians. The authorities have done everything to turn the criminal case against Ilya into a show trial. The hearing was closed to the public, and people who came to support Ilya on July 13, 2022 were being detained near the court building.

“Memorial”* recognized Mr. Yashin as a political prisoner.
